Osteopathy For Pregnant Women

Boniface focuses a large part of his work on helping pregnant women. He works in close collaboration with Dr. Gibb, the director of The Birth Company, and has therefore gained a unique experience with pregnant patients.

He believes that understanding the changes associated with pregnancy can help you have a happy and healthy pregnancy. He dedicates his care to helping both mum and baby alike.

How your body changes during pregnancy

During pregnancy, HGC (Human Gonadic Gonadotrophin), a hormone produced by the baby's placenta, has a dramatic effect on the mother's body. One of the roles of HCG is to help the ligaments to soften in order to make the pelvis more flexible at the time of delivery.

However, its action is not confined to the pelvic ligaments, and therefore most ligaments in the body get looser. This process, along with normal weight gain and an increase in abdominal size changes the biomechanics of the whole body, and can lead to dysfunction and discomfort.

That's where osteopathy, by balancing the body's mechanics, will help the mum-to-be cope with these changes. In addition, with most drugs being inadvisable during pregnancy, it seems quite evident that a safe and natural hands-on treatment is the way forward.

Osteopathic treatment can help to ease many of the physical discomforts that women may experience during pregnancy, including: nausea, heartburn, breathing difficulties, chest and rib pain, lower back and pelvic pain, sciatica, water retention, and (by helping venous and lymphatic drainage) varicose veins and haemorrhoids.

Boniface can help you be more aware of your body and its changing patterns, and can advise you about simple exercises you can do at home.

Preparing for labour with Osteopathy

Loosening the pelvis and releasing tensions from the lower back and abdomen will help you relax and experience a more comfortable labour and birth.

Boniface also works in close association with a number of other holistic practitioners who specialise in pregnancy, such as Yoga teachers, Acupuncturists, Massage therapists, and Pilates instructors to ensure you are offered the most suitable technique for the fastest relief from your symptoms.
